Swallows have gathered in a small beech tree, gossiping loudly, complaining about summer’s end. A long cool exhalation of breeze rising from the west wipes over the soft skin of my throat, chills. Dog-walking clothes take on layers now, and closed-in footwear begin to press tiny toe bones into shoe-shaped feet.
