The magnolia is full of satin buds as pink and smooth as pointe shoes before the dancer double-darns, threading cotton to chain stitch around the toe block, neat as steps, neat as phalangeal bones stacked on a silver shilling. As buds burst shoes become skirts moving in unison, anonymous, blooming on the one tree that stands motionless centre stage.
